As Technical Sponsor, you will have a central role in the successful delivery of Europe’s largest rail project, ensuring that HS2 delivers transformational benefits to the UK’s transport infrastructure while interfacing safely and reliably with the existing rail network.
Working as part of a flexible and supportive Rail Systems and Commissioning team with accountability for HS2’s technical strategies for rolling stock and railway systems, you will be provided with excellent opportunity for personal and professional development within a high profile and busy work environment.
You will sponsor and oversee the development of HS2 Ltd's technical strategies, with a particular focus on train control & railway systems engineering. Your role will provide opportunity for collaboration and senior-level engagement with multiple internal and external stakeholders such as other Department for Transport (DfT) functions, HS2 Ltd, the Office of Road and Rail, and Network Rail.
Your key responsibilities will include:
- Sponsor and oversee the development of HS2 Ltd's technical plans, policies, & strategies (including Innovation; Design; Engineering Management, Technical Assurance; Commissioning; Infrastructure Maintenance; Sustainability; Environmental; etc.) with a particular focus on train control and railway systems engineering.
- Establish and maintain an effective working relationship with HS2 Ltd, DfT colleagues, other government departments and key stakeholders, notably Network Rail, the ORR and International bodies.
- Ensure HS2 Ltd's proposals and advice in the railway systems domain are consulted with DfT Rail Group (i.e. the rest of UK Rail) and are coordinated with strategies for rolling stock, train operation and ‘civils’ and systems infrastructure.

You will have previous involvement in the design, construction and/or maintenance of technically complex engineering projects, preferably in a railway or electrical systems environment.
You can demonstrate your use of sound judgment, evidence and knowledge to provide accurate, expert and professional advice, both orally and written with an ability to work strategically with minimal direction including engagement with senior internal and external stakeholders.
