Midland Metro Wolverhampton extension approved

22 Jun 2016

UK: Powers to extend the Midland Metro light rail line in Wolverhampton were granted on June 21 by Secretary of State for Transport Patrick McLoughlin. The Transport & Works Act Order will come into force after a statutory six-week standstill period, allowing preparatory work to begin.

The £18m project would extend the route along Pipers Row with stops at the bus station and the city’s railway station, which is being redeveloped as part of the Wolverhampton Interchange Project. Opening is scheduled for 2019.

The project is being carried out by Transport for West Midlands in partnership with the City of Wolverhampton Council and Neptune Developments. It forms part of a larger project being funded by the Black Country Local Enterprise Partnership, the city council and the West Midlands Combined Authority.
