In recent years annual passenger numbers have been increasing significantly on the Iarnród Éireann/ Irish Rail network and are currently running at approximately 45 million per annum. In order to meet the projected further increase in demand Iarnród Éireann are proposing to expand its infrastructure in the form of a significant Capital Investment Programme. The Capital Investment Programme will see over €1.7bn euro invested in the Iarnród Éireann infrastructure over the last 10 year period from 2018 to 2028.

The proposed Capital Investment Programme will increase capacity in the heavy rail network with expansion of the Dublin Area Transit system (DART). The ART expansion will include electrification, resignalling and adding tracks to branch lines. New interchanges with the proposed Metro Link will also be added to the network n addition to remodelling of existing stations. Other ongoing projects will continue with improvements to Station Accessibility, Car parking & the Re-signalling of Dublin City Centre. Cork City will also see an expanded network with the addition of several new stations.

In order to commence the proposed Capital Investment Programme Iarnród Éireann/Irish Rail is seeking to initially recruit 17 staff for positions in the following projects; DART expansion Team, National Train Control Centre, Accessibility Project and the Train Protection System.
